binge god's guide to January's watches

Writer: Binge GodBinge God

January was a pretty full month as far as notable watches go. From eagerly awaited watches like the return of Apple Tv’s  Severance to disappointing new shows/movies like Netflix’s ‘Missing You’ and ‘Back in Action.

I’ve laughed, gasped, held my breath, and screamed “I TOLD YOU” at my screen more than once. So, grab a drink, get some snacks, settle in & prepare to take some notes, as I break down the best (and worst) shows and movies I watched in January

One of Apple TV’s crown jewels, thanks to an incredible first season, is back now, continuing this unique sci-fi story. Season 2 proves to be just as eerie, mysterious, and captivating as the first.

It is a must-watch for anyone into mysteries, sci-fi, and dystopian themes.

4.5/5

Newcomer ‘Paradise’ is absolutely worth the watch thanks to the unique and take on the standard ‘post-apocalyptic event’ storyline, a strong cast, and the captivating mystery at its core.

This one’s definitely worth peeping if you enjoy political thrillers, and/or mysteries.

3.9/5

If you enjoyed season 1, you’re sure to enjoy the second season of Netflix’s night agent as it returns with the same high-intensity, characters & storylines, plus a lot of growth and character development for series lead, Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel basso).

If you haven’t seen Night agent at all, I strongly recommend it if you enjoy spy/political thrillers with lots of action & a charismatic lead.

3.7/5

Netflix’s American Primeval proved to be January’s hidden gem: coming out with little promotion and generating little conversation online, the series surprised me with gritty, mature themes, high-intensity action, stellar performances, and lots of emotion.

Strong recommend it if you’re into Westerns and/or thrillers.

3.8/5

Harlen Coben has had a lot of his books turned into Netflix series, and a lot of them have been quite entertaining, but unfortunately his most recent adaptation suffered significantly from weak writing, a disappointing ending, and generally prioritising shock over quality.

You should skip this one.

2.5/5

Despite the silly comments from the lead voice actor, YFNH is in fact quite “woke” i.e. socially conscious, and thankfully,  pretty entertaining! Everyone’s familiar with Spidey’s origin story, but thanks to some multiversal storytelling (in a rare instance where the multiverse is actually used well) it feels quite  unique.

Promising show so far, looking forward to more. If you’re into spiderman or comic book content in general, I’d recommend checking this out.

3.5/5

Fascinating premise with mathematics being one of the main themes. I was immediately sold after ep 1, thanks to a captivating conspiracy and  a strong performance from lead, Leo Woodall.

Very eager to see where it goes & would recommend it to fans of thrillers and/or conspiracies. It’s the kinda show that requires all your attention but you won’t regret giving it.

3.8/5

If you’ve been watching Mythic Quest, all you need to hear is that season 4 has started just as well as the previous seasons, and if you’ve enjoyed them, you’ll no doubt continue to do so! If you haven’t, Mythic Quest is a hilarious show about a successful video game company and the creatives behind its success.

Made by Rob Mcelhenney, AKA Mac from Always Sunny, so if you’re an Always Sunny fan, it’s a pretty safe bet you’ll enjoy this too.

3.8/5

I really enjoyed the second season of the recruit, maybe even more than the first! It’s got action, espionage, mystery, lots of emotion and features a stellar, charismatic performance from Noah Centineo as Owen Hendrix.

If you enjoyed season 1, you’ll definitely enjoy season 2, and if you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely worth watching, especially if you’re into spy/political thrillers.

4/5

The Abbott X Sunny crossover episode was a lot of fun and quite a satisfying watch. While it lacked a lot of Dennis (my favourite Always Sunny character), I’ve read that he’ll be a big element of the second part of this episode.

Plus, since it’ll be an Always Sunny episode, I’m hoping the humour gets a little more adult and closer to the Always sunny style, but I think this first episode was a great way to kick things off.

3.5.5

Stellar animation and action sequences,  just like season 1. I enjoyed it while watching, but haven’t really thought too much about it since finishing it. I feel like that’s partly down to how long its been since season 1, but also because the story for season 2 didn’t feel as engaging as the previous seasons’ story.

If you’ve seen season 1, if you’re a big castlevania fan, or if you’re just a big fan of animation, I’d recommend this show, but if not, you can probably skip it.

3.5/5

Been a fan of the show since day 1 and if you’ve been enjoying the harley quinn animated series, that doesn’t seem likely to stop with season 5! This season brings a refreshing change of scenery and a few interesting new characters, but other than that it feels like the same show we’ve known and loved since episode one (so far).

I’d recommend checking it out if you like comic book content and/or, lighthearted, easy-to-watch TV.

3.5/5

Another futuristic, dystopian series from Apple TV, but Silo takes its dystopian concept the furthest. Season 2 moves faster than season, revealing interesting secrets and story points, but still feels like it could move faster.

If you’re into dystopian stories I strongly recommend Silo, but keep in mind you will need to be patient because it moves quite slowly in the first season!

3.8/5

Despite starting the first episode with some high-quality bloody action sequences, Sakomoto Days has proven to be a little too light-hearted for me so far. Given the fact that the main character is a retired hitman I expect the action to ramp back up at some point, but three eps in and I’m still waiting.

I’d only recommend this to someone heavily into anime (and honestly, maybe not even then), so if you’re not already familiar with anime, this is NOT where I’d start.

3/5

If you’re into anime, animation, video-games and/or action, I recommend checking this show out!

3.5/5

It has been a solid month for streaming shows with high-quality second seasons from returning shows like night agent, the recruit, & severance, as well as surprising newcomers like American primeval & paradise.

it hasn't been the strongest month for streaming movies, but let's see what february has to offer. thanks for reading and don't forget to Share your favourite watches of January in the comments below!
