my favourite directors' worst movies

Writer's picture: Binge GodBinge God

As a Drake fan, if last year taught me anything, it’s that even the greats can get caught slipping. Naturally it only took a few seconds for me to apply this train of thought to the film industry, and before you know it the concept for this post was born.

I’ve selected 5 of my favourite directors: zack snyder, joran peele, robert eggers, ari aster and christopher nolan, and chosen my least favourite films from each of their filmographies. From poor creative/narrative choices, to simply picking my least favourite from an exceptional bunch, this blog will explore these films and why they’re my least favourite.

My main issues with Rebel Moon are the scale and pacing. I think Zack’s main strength lies in the epic energy that he brings to his projects. While there are very clear epic story elements of Rebel Moon, we spend way too much time focused on the story’s smaller, less interesting aspects (veldt & its protection) instead of exploring the much bigger plotlines and detailed lore (the magical f*cking space princess and the giant crying space cyborgs!?!).

We know these elements are there because the movie does eventually get to them, but literally not till the end of the second movie.

I usually really enjoy Zack’s work, but between the botched Netflix release strategy and the poor use of time, Netflix & Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon is very easily my least favourite film of Zack Snyder’s.

This is more of a case of me choosing my least favourite of 3 movies I really like. That said, i did have some problems with Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’, and while they’re pretty minor concerns (main narrative choices & details regarding the untethered), I feel like Get Out & Nope are both near flawless, so ‘Us’ is the easy choice for me.

however, I cannot mention this movie without highlighting Lupita Nyongo’s award-worthy performance and how much it truly elevated this movie. I’d love to see her in another horror as the antagonist.

I actually saw this movie in the cinema on a date( because the movie we wanted to watch had sold out and this seemed like a good substitute) and ended up loving it because of how gritty, dark & chilling it is, plus stellar performances from the entire cast.

This is definitely a case of choosing the movie I love the least (as opposed to choosing a movie I don't like).  The only reason it's my least favourite Eggers movie is that Eggers’ other movies since then (The Lighthouse, The Northman, Nosferatu) have all taken the elements of this movie that I loved, and gone even further with them.

After Hereditary & Midsommar, Ari Aster was pretty much my favourite director. I felt that the guy was a visionary and a genius that could do no wrong. Since watching Beau is afraid, my views have changed.

I’m still a big fan of Aster’s, but now I’m pretty sure he can make mistakes, and I think this movie is one of them. While it is somewhat captivating, the movie is over 3 hours and basically has no actual story. Because of the strong performances and visuals, I’m not gonna say it’s a bad movie, but it is definitely way too experimental for me and considering his first two movies are some of my favourites of all time, Beau is Afraid is easily my least favourite Ari Aster film.

This was an easy choice for me (I’m not including ‘The Following’  or Dunkirk as I haven’t seen them) because even though it’s a solid movie and began one of the most iconic CBM trilogies in history, it’s commonly acknowledged as the worst of the trilogy and I don’t think it really compares to the rest of his discography either.

I typically focus on the positive and try not to spend too much time on films I don’t like, but since these are some of my favourite directors (and in some situations it’s not even that I don’t like the selected film) I think that exploring my least favourite movies of theirs helps build a more well-rounded perspective about them as directors, and helps me further identify what I do and don’t like in a movie. It’s a fun exercise that I strongly recommend you take part in via the comments below!!
